Game 2 Review: A slow start, and then a slaughter
Posted on 17. Nov, 2009 by JF.
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to being a bit nervous throughout most of the first half of the Gophers 82-42 win over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. Over the weekend Iowa lost to Southland Conference also-ran UT-San Antonio, and for a while at least it appeared that the Lumberjacks had an upset on [...]

Tubby’s Tip-off- The Youtube Roundup
Posted on 18. Oct, 2009 by JF.
I know I haven’t provided my usual nerdy recap of Tubby’s Tip-off. There was a nice weather emergency this weekend. The sun was actually out, and I wasn’t about to waste the last opportunity to clean out the garage. You’ll get your recap, I promise. In lieu of the recap, more videos of the fun [...]

At least during the dunk contest. We’ll be back later today with a more in-depth breakdown of last night, but until then, wow…

Royce White grew up, now can he live up to expectations?
Posted on 21. Sep, 2009 by JF.
Royce White grew up. His basketball skills were never in doubt. Since his Freshman year at De LaSalle he has been on recruiting lists a mile long and heralded as the next great basketball player to come out of Minnesota. All that attention, hype, and praise can go to a young man’s head, and it [...]

Table-top Barn Ball
Posted on 15. Apr, 2009 by JF.
On Kare 11 News last night, eternal creator of mixed feelings (funny, annoying, rage inducing?) Eric Perkins featured what could only be described as the perfect Christmas present. If anyone out there has wood-working skills, has 400 spare hours, and wants to send this over: a table-top basketball game that is a near-perfect replica of Williams [...]

The Gophers are Dancing!
Posted on 15. Mar, 2009 by JF.
And the dance will be Texas two-step. Despite one of the tougher draws of the entire field (Texas and then Duke, ouch) it is absolutely thrilling to be back in the NCAA Tournament. Needless to say from the video of their reaction (expand to full-screen if it doesn’t work) the players are excited. Congratulations!

Badgers beat, sweep complete!
Posted on 05. Mar, 2009 by JF.
As anyone who has participated in a live blog here can tell you, I check my objective blogger persona at the door when the Gophers are in a close game. This is especially the case at The Barn when Wisconsin comes to town. While comparisons to past games and various statistics are still floating around [...]

Gophers crush Illinois for a streak of their own
Posted on 30. Jan, 2009 by JF.
Highlights from BTN So much for the 20 game losing streak to Illinois, and so much for anything resembling reasonable expectations for the rest of the year. After a blistering forty minutes of in your face, no gimmicks, straight up defense, the Gophers blew the doors off The Barn and blew out the Fighting Illini, 59-36. [...]

Miracle in Madison
Posted on 16. Jan, 2009 by JF.
Highlights from BTN Highlights from ESPN Lawrence Westbrook interview Defying every stereotype of the always choking Minnesota team, the Gophers roared back from a fourteen point deficit in the second half, took control early in overtime, and beat the Badgers leaving the Kohl Center in shocked and devastated silence. The 78-74 overtime win was Minnesota’s [...]

Gophers bounce back big over Buckeyes
Posted on 04. Jan, 2009 by JF.
ESPN Highlights Big Ten Network Highlights After what could have been a confidence crippling, season opening loss to Michigan State (much like last year’s home loss to Indiana), an intense and determined Gopher basketball team led #23 Ohio State by as much as 18 late in the second half on their way to a 68-59 [...]

Blowout caps Minnesota’s best start since 1948
Posted on 29. Dec, 2008 by JF.
Highlights from ESPN Highlights from BTN Did people care about strength of schedule in 1948? Is this Minnesota’s weakest non-conference schedule since 1948. I’m guessing the answer to both of those questions is no. Regardless of the Gophers’ non-conference opponents so far, they have started the season with twelve straight wins for the first time [...]

The last great team that counted

So, instead of reading what would excessively long preview, why not watch one of the truely great Gopher teams playing probably the best Illinois team ever. This video is from the second Illinois-Minnesota game of 1988-1989 season. Minnesota’s roster: No. Name Pos. Elg. Ht. Wt. Hometown 40 Bond, Walter F So 6-5 220 Chicago, IL [...]

That 8 year old who sang the national anthem
Posted on 21. Dec, 2008 by JF.
So, you may have heard about a little kid that sang the national anthem before the St. Cloud State game. It was bound to show up on youtube, and it finally has. This kid and his voice on the eve of an historic election couldn’t have been more serendipitous. This should also give you at [...]

Watch Rodney Williams play an entire game
Posted on 16. Dec, 2008 by JF.
For those who haven’t been able to see Rodney Williams in person, or those who would rather not deal with the inevitable chaos that will follow him this season, take a look at this video. He will undoubtedly add some flash and athleticism to the Gophers next season. I don’t think we’ve seen a 360 [...]

Blake or Devoe: Who takes the final shot next year?
Posted on 16. Mar, 2008 by JF.
Blake of course, right? But two options are better than one. Good video: horrible, typical, youtube audio. Bad video: better audio with no horrible music. Looks like Devoe can be clutch in a championship game too. And yes, the Gophers lost to Illinois for the 20th straight time. Not all that suprising, or worth writing [...]

The Hoffarber Miracle: Part 2
Posted on 14. Mar, 2008 by JF.
I’ve watched more Gopher basketball games than I can count, sitting in The Barn when it was all bench seats, squashed between people 10 times my size, trying to see through small gaps between the people in front of me, following the game more by sound than by sight, because when you are 5 years [...]

McKenzie’s career high helps Gophers overcome poor rebounding
Posted on 22. Feb, 2008 by JF.
At least it was entertaining. On a night featuring Spencer Tollackson dunking in traffic and hitting a three pointer, Jonathan Williams bailing out the Gophers and air-balling a free throw, Lawrence McKenzie scoring a career high 26 points, and even some relatively productive minutes from Kevin Payton, Minnesota beat the much improved Michigan Wolverines. I [...]

Gophers finally run away from the Hawkeyes
Posted on 11. Feb, 2008 by JF.
So much for that freshman wall. Led by the speed and defense of Al Nolen and a small line-up, the Gophers blew open a close game to beat Iowa 63-50. Nolen, who recently had been spending more time on the bench than on the court, energized Minnesota in the second half by playing his typical [...]

Their caucus sytem is based on barbeque and violates every tenant of democracy. The inmates (apes) run the asylum (research facility). The 80 acre enclosed rainforest that was supposed to save the state’s economy was a bigger failure than the former state slogan. If pigs gained a few brain cells, Des Moines would look something [...]

Nolen-less Gophers look lost in loss to Spartans
Posted on 22. Jan, 2008 by JF.
Al Nolen missed Sunday afternoon’s game against Michigan State, and the Gophers missed his steady ball handling, defense, and ability to distribute the ball particularly in the half court offense, as Minnesota lost 78-73. At first glance, the final score could indicate that Sunday was another, albeit frustrating, sign that the Gophers barely missed another [...]

D.J. White doesn’t let the Hoosiers lose, but they sure tried

The Barn is definitely back. After a hiatus of decade (with occasional brief glimpses of what it once was) Williams Arena returned to form as one of the toughest places to play in all of college basketball. The lobby was filled an hour and a half before game time, the student section was full 45 [...]
