Austin Hollins eclipses milestone in win over SDSU

Even with one of the sparsest crowds of the season, the Gophers had several notable moments in their 75-59 victory over South Dakota State. With both Andre and Austin Hollins on the verge of eclipsing 1,000 points for their careers and Rick Pitino in the stands donning Minnesota colors, the Gophers outmuscled a Nate Wolters-less Jackrabbits squad and leaned heavily on Elliott Eliason, Drizzy Mathieu and Austin Hollins to put SDSU away relatively soundly. With Malik Smith and Eliason back from injuries that essentially forced…

Life after Wolters has been rough for the Jackrabbits.

Life after Nate Wolters has not been easy for South Dakota. This was completely expected. The Jackrabbits had only been a Division I program for 5 years when Wolters jointed the team, barely a Division I recruit himself. By the end of his college career, Wolters was headed to the NBA, and the Jackrabbits were an NCAA tournament team. Players like Wolters don’t come around often, and he might prove to be irreplaceable.

Kendal Shell scores career high in SDSU thrashing

Hey, the first (and likely only) Kendal Shell headline that will ever occur! It wasn’t the highlight of the game, but in a relatively boring, Wolters-less victory over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, Mr. End-of-the-Bench scored a career high four points in garbage time as the Gophers destroyed SDSU 88-64 and continued to outpace their lesser-tier opponents. Billed as the final chance for hometown standout Nate Wolters to finally show his big, bad home state university what they were missing, the game never materialized into…

Sure there’s a border, but there won’t be much of a battle.

And now, the target is firmly affixed to the Golden Gophers back. When the top 25 poll results were announced this afternoon, the Gophers were ranked #14 by the AP and #21 by the coaches. Any talk of being a sleeper team or underrated or under the radar evaporated immediately. Now the hard work of justifying and keeping the ranking begins.

Gophers battle back to down Jackrabbits

It wasn’t the prettiest of victories, especially considering the opponent, but when the scoreboard read 0:00 one of the only things that mattered was the Gophers sitting with a higher score than their opponent. It was an uneasy, squeamish first half for the Gophers, who couldn’t seem to find their shots, much less the bottom of the basket, and again struggled with getting into a flow on offense. Trevor Mbakwe and the inside game were invisible and the lack of a definitive three-point shooter…

A modest proposal for a “Best of the Midwest” tournament, and then a look at South Dakota State

The Golden Gophers play their second game of the season against their not exactly rivals from South Dakota State University. It has been several years since the Gophers started playing the state schools that hug the western border of Minnesota, and the novelty has worn off. Playing regional low-majors is a phenomenon that will never go away. The Golden Gophers need a few easy games early in the season, and since they pay for all the costs associated with the game including travel expenses, lodging,…

Picking the non-conference season

An exercise in futility can best be described as predicting the future based on incomplete information about 18-22 year olds, who of course always act rationally, make wise decisions, and perform to expectations. Feel free to leave your picks in the comments if you so desire, so five months from now I can at the very least be slightly less futile than someone else. 11/11/11 vs. Bucknell Williams Arena 7:00 p.m. CT Gophers win a close one. Bucknell is a good mid-major, but Mike Muscala,…

Looking back at the non-conference season and forward to the Big Ten

The Gophers will enter Big Ten play with an 11-1 record, and will likely enter Big Ten play as the second highest ranked Big Ten team after beating South Dakota State on Christmas Eve Eve. It is obviously a little late for the traditional write-up, thanks to the hectic nature of the holiday season. Instead, allow me to regale you with some of the random thoughts that have been bouncing around my head as we approach the Big Ten Tip-off against our hated neighbors to…

Nolen, of course, has been out for several weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.…
