Three years later, who is Royce White?

Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the day Royce White made a mistake that would alter the rest of his life. On October 13, 2009 he made the decision to steal from a Macy’s department store – $100 worth of merchandise, to be exact – and got in an altercation with a security guard when confronted. As we all well remember, this not only led to charges from Bloomington police of shoplifting and fifth-degree assault (UPDATE: this charge was later dropped according to Mr. White himself) but…

Joel Maturi’s reign of error finally ends

Months of breathless speculation and restrained hopefulness, Joel Maturi finally announced that he is stepping down as the University of Minnesota Athletic Director. Nearly ten years after he was hired in part to clean up the department after it was implicated in the academic fraud scandal that decimated the basketball program, he noted one of his greatest achievements was the lack of NCAA violations during his tenure. He did do that, but little else to benefit the university or the men’s basketball program.

Part 1: The Lost Season

The 2009-2010 Gopher basketball season hasn’t gone the way any expected or wanted. The string of close losses, catching Portland at absolutely the wrong time, a near epic comeback at Indiana, the epic anti-comeback against Michigan State, and the most lackluster defensive performance at Ohio State have been equal parts frustrating, confusing, and infuriating, and those are just on the court! Add in the suspensions of Royce White, Trevor Mbakwe, Devron Bostick, and Al Nolen, and the film room altercation between Lawrence Westbrook and Nolen,…

And finally a positive distraction

After a tumultuous week, the Gopher basketball program will ironically provide a distraction from itself. Trevor Mbakwe is out…

Rules Violation Specified: Royce White arrested for stupidity

So maybe he hasn’t grown up. Word leaked late this afternoon that Royce White was arrested in October for shop lifting and fifth degree assault. For non-legal scholars, fifth degree assault is defined here. Both crimes appear to be firmly on the idiotic side of the idiotic-harmful pendulum, and the indefinite suspension punishment appears appropriate at this time. No doubt this is stupid, but he is hardly a threat to society (especially when compared to the charges another Gopher power forward is facing). He is,…

Things fall apart: White and Bostick suspended

Royce White and Devron Bostick have been suspended indefinitely for, you guessed it, an unspecified team rules violation. No word what this violation is, and how long the suspension will be. Hopefully this is a minor violation and that both players will atone for their mistakes and re-join the team soon. Regardless, this, along with the Mbakwe situation, is not a good way to start the season. Like this:Like Loading…

Royce White grew up, now can he live up to expectations?

Royce White grew up. His basketball skills were never in doubt. Since his Freshman year at De LaSalle he has been on recruiting lists a mile long and heralded as the next great basketball player to come out of Minnesota. All that attention, hype, and praise can go to a young man’s head, and it seemed to for White. After some class room/behavioral problems, a well publicized outburst or two on the court, and his eventual dismissal from De LaSalle, it looked like the almost…

Barn Blurbs 2/17/09

Royce White named a Jordan Brand All-American I hope this doesn’t mean he will need to carve a swoosh into his faux-hawk. Post-Minnesota tidbits A detailed break down of bad officiating and worse turnovers, if you are into that sort of thing. Gopher backcourt searching for backbone The city pages does a little numbering crunching, and yes, it is ugly. You’re Killing Me Smalls Like just about everyone the Gophers have played, Penn State remembered how to shoot free throws when it counted the most.…

Barn Blurbs 2/11/09: NIT? Edition

Royce and Rodney now online (Part 1 and 2) After that horrific “win” why not look ahead to the hope of a functional offense, and watch  the two best players in the state play in their much hyped show down. Sharing sports beats: Can it happen here? Only one reporter in this town covers the Gophers anyway. Gophers struggle to beat Indiana It still counts as one win, and the Michigan State fiasco counts as only one loss. Taking care of the ball In case…
