Gopher Offseason Happenings

The offseason is just a few weeks old and already the Gopher basketball team has a couple things to report. First and foremost, Paul Carter has announced that he will be transferring from the U to be closer to his sister, who is battling cancer in Chicago.  Carter has said he will consider the University of Illinois-Chicago, Chicago State and DePaul in his decision to transfer.  Appearing in 63 games (seven starts) for the Gophers during his career, Carter logged 15.5 minutes per game while…

Streaks this long don’t end easily

A ten point half time lead was surprising. A seemingly insurmountable 19 point lead with just over seven minutes left was shocking. The final score, a 62-60 victory for the Gophers was only unexpected because the Gophers won. Assembly Hall has been a house of horrors for the Gophers for decades. The last win at Illinois came in 1996, a one point win against a mediocre at best Illini squad in Lou Henson’s final game. I don’t remember March of 1996 particularly well. Apparently the…

A little perspective has taken the Gophers a long way

On his first field goal attempt of his college basketball career, punt returner/point guard rolled in a three pointer. Moments later he hit Justin Cobbs on a three-quarter court bounce pass that led to a thunderous dunk. A second later it was Rodney Williams streaking to the basket, too contested to dunk but not for a pretty finger roll. And the bench exploded. This wasn’t the typical celebration during a time-out. It was a loud full throated jubilation as the players streamed on the court.…

Bubble burst(ing) Michigan 71 – Gophers 63

I came into yesterday’s game with above-average expectations for a team that, for the most part, has underachieved all season.  They’d been up and down for the better part of the last month but were coming off a stretch where they had won two of three and seemed to have been gaining some momentum after an exciting Penn State finish.  A win over a struggling, down-on-their-luck Wolverines squad at home was going to propel the Gophers into a season-saving finish that would land them in…

Game 15 Review: Not too embarassing

Minnesota’s goal going into last night’s game at #4 Purdue was of course to win, and if not win, at least be competitive. That secondary goal was achieved, though the scoreboard may indicate otherwise. The scoreboard is not always a reliable narrator. The 12 point Gopher victory in Iowa City was more of a blow out than last night’s 19 point loss. Last year’s 8 point Purdue win at Williams Arena felt like more of a blowout that Minnesota’s victory over Iowa. Last year’s 12…

Game 14 Preview: Gophers vs. Iowa

Golden Gophers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes 3:00 pm (CST) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena (Iowa City, Iowa) Radio: WCCO 830 AM TV: Big Ten Network One year removed from questioning whether the Minnesota-Iowa rivalry, once one of the most intense in all of college basketball, was dead, I’ve decided to find out first hand. In a first but hopefully not last for me, I will be attending my very first Gopher road game from the friendly confines of a roughly 30% full Carver Hawkeye Arena. The cost can’t…

Game 3 Preview: Gophers vs. Utah Valley Wolverines

Golden Gophers vs. Utah Valley Wolverines 7:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Radio: WCCO 830 AM TV: Big Ten Network (actual live TV!) Tickets: Best available- Row 11 upper deck, center court Naming a college basketball conference is an exercise  in redundancy. There are really only three ingredients in a conference name; a synonym of large, a number, and/or a general geographic region. A few bend the rules, such as the Metro Atlantic Conference (to which geographic region would this refer?), the Big…

Barnblurbs 11/18/09: Twitter, in-game coverage, and a look around the Big Ten

By request, we are trying to add some Twitter functionality. We have already added the widget on the right hand side of the site. If you or anyone else uses the hash tag #umnhoops it will be fed through the widget and appear there. For those of you gifted with a good cell phone, skinny thumbs, and the ability to multi-task, this is a great way to keep folks informed of your thoughts, especially if you are at a game. I’m also trying to find…

And finally a positive distraction

Golden Gophers vs. University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 7:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Radio: WCCO 830 AM TV: Bigtennetwork.com (Streaming for $2.99) Tickets: Best available- Row 11, upper deck, center court It has been pointed out many times here and by many others elsewhere that Gopher basketball is the perfect distraction from the cold dark winters that embrace Minnesota for seemingly months on end. After a tumultuous week, the Gopher basketball program will ironically provide a distraction from itself. Trevor Mbakwe is out…

A season in review: Paul Carter

This article is part five of our season review. Part one discussed Kevin Payton. Part two looked at Travis Busch. Part three covered Jamal Abu-Shamala. Part four waxed poetic about Jonathan Williams. Paul Carter arrived in Minneapolis just over a year ago with undeniable potential and more than a few questions. Not least of these questions was how long he would stick around. No, he wasn’t going to a one-and-done, either dashing off for the NBA at the first opportunity or throwing away a once…
