Summer Update

Though the calendar keeps creeping towards June and next season is little more than an afterthought for most people, the Gopher basketball team continues to stay in the local, and national, headlines. In a story that developed and ended quickly, sophomore point guard Justin Cobbs decided to transfer from Minnesota and enroll at the University of California.  Cobbs, a native Californian, was unable to make a significant impact in his freshman year for the Gophers, which isn’t surprising considering the depth of last season’s team.…

It’s A Wrap

We laughed in disbelief, cried at Ed Hightower’s injustices, scratched our heads, threw pillows and even cheered wildly at times, but the roller coaster that was the 2009-10 season mercifully came to an end in a 65-54 loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to the Xavier Musketeers. The specifics of the game are pretty unimportant as the same stories that accompany most Gopher losses manifested themselves on Friday.  Poor shooting, lack of rebounding presence, a suspect half-court offense and little intensity; the…

Ugly: Ohio State 85 – Gophers 63

After an encouraging victory at home over a legitimate Northwestern team, the Gophers went on the road to Ohio State in hopes of building on their glimmer of success.  What we saw, though, was perhaps the worst performance of the year from Minnesota at a point in the season where you’d like to see quite the opposite. Losing to Ohio State in Columbus is nothing to be ashamed about.  The Buckeyes are 13-0 at home this season and are incredibly tough to go against when…

Wanted: New Starting PG

As if the hits wouldn’t stop coming for Minnesota, it’s starting to look like a distinct possibility that Al Nolen could be lost for the rest of the season due to academic ineligibility.  The full story is still coming together, and it’s possible that he might find himself off the hook due to an NCAA loophole, but it might be time for Gopher Nation to start imagining a life without Al. As it stands, Nolen is currently ineligible due to his academic shortcomings and will…

And finally a positive distraction

Golden Gophers vs. University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 7:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Radio: WCCO 830 AM TV: Bigtennetwork.com (Streaming for $2.99) Tickets: Best available- Row 11, upper deck, center court It has been pointed out many times here and by many others elsewhere that Gopher basketball is the perfect distraction from the cold dark winters that embrace Minnesota for seemingly months on end. After a tumultuous week, the Gopher basketball program will ironically provide a distraction from itself. Trevor Mbakwe is out…

Tubby’s Tip-off- The Youtube Roundup

I know I haven’t provided my usual nerdy recap of Tubby’s Tip-off. There was a nice weather emergency this weekend. The sun was actually out, and I wasn’t about to waste the last opportunity to clean out the garage. You’ll get your recap, I promise. In lieu of the recap, more videos of the fun night at The Barn along with some grainy failed attempts at photography by yours truely, enjoy. Now still pictures Like this:Like Loading…

Justin Cobbs: Pushing the point

If you needed any proof that Tubby Smith has remade the Gophers into a national program, look no further than Justin Cobbs. The native of Los Angeles passed on offers from several west coast programs and the opportunity to bask in year round sun shine and beautiful people for Minnesota, its lack of sunshine, and ancient basketball arena (which, obviously, is the best arena in the country). The Gophers have had big need for a point guard the last two seasons, and Cobbs, a 6’0”…

Williams, White, and Cobbs are officially Gophers

…after a pleasantly uneventful signing day. The press release: The Minnesota men’s basketball program today announced the signings of Justin Cobbs, Royce White and Rodney Williams to National Letters of Intent. All three players will be eligible to compete during the 2009-10 season. “We are pleased with the number of young men we were able to sign. We believe that we have improved our talent level with this class and have fulfilled our needs,”” said head coach Tubby Smith. “”This group has a lot of…

Gophers get verbal from Justin Cobbs

The Gophers search for a point guard appears to be over, possibly. We have of course been here before, when Verdell Jones committed, then didn’t then went to Indiana in the search of more playing time. This time, Marcus Fuller of the Pioneer Press along with other websites are reporting that Justin Cobbs, a 6’1” 185 lb true point guard out of California has verbally committed to play for the Gophers starting with the 2009-2010 season. Cobbs avereaged 17 ppg with 8 assists per game…
