Game 15 Preview: On with the show, with or without Devoe

Golden Gophers vs. Indiana Hoosiers 6:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: ESPN2 Tickets: Row 28, corner, lower deck (obstructed) When the clock struck 12 midnight on January 1, 2011, it officially marked the end of one of the more turbulent years in the history of Golden Gopher basketball. After a relatively drama free few months, it looked like the focus would finally be on basketball. So much for that. Word broke this morning that reserve guard Devoe Joseph is either suspended, quitting,…

Gophers unable to overcome Wisconsin fundamentals in 68-60 loss

Several questions faced the Minnesota Golden Gopher basketball team as they entered Big Ten conference play.  How would they handle the relative increased level of competition?  Would they play up to their opponent after playing down so often in the non-conference season?  How would the team look with both Al Nolen and Devoe Joseph healthy and playing?  These questions were more or less answered in Minnesota’s frustrating 68-60 road loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten season opener in which they were torched by Jordan…

Looking back at the non-conference season and forward to the Big Ten

The Gophers will enter Big Ten play with an 11-1 record, and will likely enter Big Ten play as the second highest ranked Big Ten team after beating South Dakota State on Christmas Eve Eve. It is obviously a little late for the traditional write-up, thanks to the hectic nature of the holiday season. Instead, allow me to regale you with some of the random thoughts that have been bouncing around my head as we approach the Big Ten Tip-off against our hated neighbors to…

Game 8 Preview: Gophers vs. Cornell Big Red

Golden Gophers vs. Cornell Big Red 7:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: Big Ten Network Tickets: Row 10,  corner, upper deck Monday was an ugly, ugly game. Whether it was a perfect storm, bad luck, or a much needed wake up call, we can all agree that we are glad it is over. It is time to not just move on, but move up. The Gophers were given quite the shellacking as the president would say. Losses are never good, and most would…

Game 1 Preview: Gophers vs. Wofford Terriers

Golden Gophers vs. Wofford Terriers 7:00 pm (CDT) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Radio: WCCO Radio 830 AM TV: Streaming at http://www.bigtennetwork.com/ Tickets: Row 8, corner, upper deck Everyone clamoring for a tougher home non-conference schedule finally has their wish.  Wofford may not be a big-time traditional power house, and Terriers are hardly the most intimidating of mascots (right up there with Salukis and Gentleman), but make no mistake, this is a good opponent, and the Gophers will need to play well to win. Devoe Joseph, the…

Devoe Joseph Suspended Indefinitely

Tubby Smith announced late Thursday night that guard Devoe Joseph has been suspended indefinitely for a situation that will “take more than a few weeks to resolve.”  The reason for the suspension is pure speculation at this point, but one fact is certain: the Gophers will be without one of their expected leading scorers for the beginning of the 2010-11 season. The suspension is frustrating for several reasons, one of which was the expectation of a rare, drama-free season for the Gophers who dealt with…

Shaking Off the Rust: Gophers 78 – Winona State 72

Consider the second of two exhibition games to be just a practice and the near-upset in last night’s matchup between Minnesota and the Division II powerhouse Winona State becomes a bit easier to swallow. It would be simple enough to look back on the game  and pick apart what went wrong, what the Gophers could have improved or why almost losing to a D-II is cause for alarm as the team heads into the regular season — but treating last night’s exhibition as a regular…

Exhibition Preview: Gophers vs. Winona State

Golden Gophers vs. Winona State Warriors 7:00 pm (CDT) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: Streaming at http://www.bigtennetwork.com/ Tickets: Row 9, corner, upper deck There have been soft whispers coming from the lips of Golden Gopher basketball fans since Monday night’s exhibition game against Winona State was announced. Winona State isn’t exactly your typical Division II basketball team. They have two national championships in the last four years. They have five former Division I players on the roster. They have beaten the Gophers. Four years ago,…

Tubby’s Tip-off: It all begins

Another incredibly bizarre dance team performance, introductions from all sides, excessive Colton Iverson hip gyrations, a motorcycle, a four man three point shooting contest, a four man dunk contests, a twenty minute running time scrimmage, and poof it was all over. Maybe I am getting too old to enjoy much that happens after 11 pm or maybe it really all was a blur, but this incarnation of Tubby’s Tip-off could have been a little better. Starting so late didn’t bring in extra students. In fact,…
