Senior Day 2011: The Locals

This season has obviously been disappointing, but it pales in comparison to the tumultuous 2006-2007 season.  No one expected the Gophers to have a good season, making the NIT would have been an accomplishment. But no one predicted that fans would completely give up on the program, Dan Monson would be fired before the Big Ten season even began, and the Gophers would end the season on an eight game losing streak. It was the darkest of days for a program that has always seemed…

Game 20 Preview: With Nolen down, the rest of the season is up to the Elastic Eight

Golden Gophers vs. Northwestern Wildcats 7:30 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, MN) TV: Big Ten Network Tickets: Row 12, corner, upper deck It is hard to believe that just a few months ago there were actually complaints that the Gophers had too much depth. People were questioning why certain players were not being red-shirted and why others seemingly were receiving too much playing time. Now, one transfer and two injuries later, the Gophers are down to just eight scholarship players, three of whom are…

Game 15 Preview: On with the show, with or without Devoe

Golden Gophers vs. Indiana Hoosiers 6:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: ESPN2 Tickets: Row 28, corner, lower deck (obstructed) When the clock struck 12 midnight on January 1, 2011, it officially marked the end of one of the more turbulent years in the history of Golden Gopher basketball. After a relatively drama free few months, it looked like the focus would finally be on basketball. So much for that. Word broke this morning that reserve guard Devoe Joseph is either suspended, quitting,…

Game 13 Preview: #13 Gophers at #24 Wisconsin Badgers

Golden Gophers vs. Wisconsin Badgers 6:00 pm (CST) at Kohl Center (Madison, WI) TV: ESPN Liveblog Starting at 5:45 Finally, a chance for some answers. After seemingly endless weeks of mediocre basketball against bad teams, the Gophers take on the #24 Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten opener for both teams. By about 8pm central time on Tuesday night, we will know just how good the Gophers are. While a win would be a great way to start the season and signal to the Big…

Looking back at the non-conference season and forward to the Big Ten

The Gophers will enter Big Ten play with an 11-1 record, and will likely enter Big Ten play as the second highest ranked Big Ten team after beating South Dakota State on Christmas Eve Eve. It is obviously a little late for the traditional write-up, thanks to the hectic nature of the holiday season. Instead, allow me to regale you with some of the random thoughts that have been bouncing around my head as we approach the Big Ten Tip-off against our hated neighbors to…

Game 12 Preview: Gophers vs. South Dakota State Jackrabbits

Golden Gophers vs. South Dakota State Jackrabbits 7:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: ESPN3.com Tickets: Row 11,  corner, upper deck “Operation SurvivAL” has nearly come to an end, but the last mission may be the toughest. “Operation SurvivAL” has been, as I have previously neglected to explain, the Minnesota Golden Gophers’ attempt to survive the non-conference season without any bad losses without senior captain Al Nolen. Nolen, of course, has been out for several weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.…

Game 11 Preview: Gophers vs. Akron Zips

Golden Gophers vs. Akron Zips 7:30 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: Big Ten Network Tickets: Row 9,  corner, upper deck Another game, another milestone for Blake Hoffarber. When the Golden Gophers take on the Akron Zips (which is a female kangaroo, thank you Wikipedia) Hoffarber will have the opportunity to become just the 36th Golden.Gopher to join the thousand point club. If he keeps up his current scoring pace, he should score around 1,300 career points, and rank 16th on Minnesota’s career…

Come back, Al!

I’ll say it as bluntly as possible:  The Gophers are lucky that they’re playing the easiest part of their schedule now while Al Nolen is on the shelf rather than three weeks from now. Before this season there was a debate raging over whether Devoe Joseph or Al Nolen should handle the starting point guard duties for this season.  The Joseph camp maintained that he was the only player on the team that could create his own shot (true) and had the offensive abilities that…

Game 7 Preview: Gophers vs. Virginia Cavaliers

Golden Gophers vs. Virginia Cavaliers 6:00 pm (CST) at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minnesota) TV: ESPN2 and streaming at ESPN3.com Tickets: Row 10, behind the basket, upper deck It is now time to add injuries to the long list of issues preventing the Gophers from playing at full strength. On the night that Devoe Joseph is expected to play his first game of the season after completing the various tasks mandated by Tubby Smith, both Al Nolen and Rodney Williams are expected to miss Monday’s game.…

The First Five Games: Taking Stock

Time to exhale. After a whirlwind opening to the 2010-11 season, the Gophers (#15 in the AP Poll!) have a couple days off before resuming their non-conference schedule against North Dakota State, which provides us an opportunity to sit back and analyze exactly what we have in the current squad. While it wasn’t crazy to think that Gophers could win the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament, few expected the team to actually pull off the consecutive victories over North Carolina and West Virginia.  In fact, not…
