Tubby Smith has found next season’s starting point guard, and is name is Julian Welch. Welch, 6’3” and 200 pounds, joins the Gophers from Yuba Junior College in California, where he averaged over 20 points per game. Before his junior college days, he was the Big West freshman of the year for UC-Davis. He is more in the mold of Lawrence Westbrook than a pure point guard. While this may concern some, I’m excited to see a player that can competently handle the ball and is also a threat to score off the dribble or from the outside. More importantly is has success at the Division I level. While a lot of questions surround next season’s roster, it is becoming clear that the back court will be more athletic and unafraid to attack the basket. Check out some of his highlights below.

  1. I’m excited to see how Welch plays out. With Coleman and Hollins coming in, we’ll have a lot of youth in the backcourt next season. Hopefully these guys can put it together a little better than this year’s freshman class.
